This work is an animated reinterpretation of a scene from the opera Turandot, created in collaboration with the Royal Opera House in London in 2017.
Rather than following the entire narrative, the piece focuses on the precise moment the princess commands the city to stay awake until the prince’s name is discovered—capturing the atmosphere, tension, and psychological pressure that spread across the night.
The red ribbon sweeping through the city symbolizes command, threat, surveillance, and control. Unraveling from the palace, it winds through the streets, weaving into people’s lives and emotions, leaving traces of sleeplessness and anxiety. The buildings are deliberately painted in cold grays and blues, while scattered yellow lights mark forced wakefulness—visual cues of intrusion, unrest, and a city held hostage by an order.
Ultimately, the ribbon returns to the palace, where the princess seizes it. This moment can be read as the embodiment of power holding information, or the act of deciding someone’s fate

해당 오페라 전체 서사를 따라가기보다는, ‘왕자의 이름을 알아내라는 공주의 명령이 떨어지는 순간’, 즉, 도시 전체에 ‘누구도 잠들지 마라’는 명령이 내려진 시점의 공기와 정서를 시각적으로 포착하는 데 집중했다.
도시를 가로지르는 붉은 리본은 명령, 위협, 압박 감시의 상징으로, 궁에서 뻗어나온 리본은 도시의 밤을 휘감으며 사람들의 일상과 감정 속으로 침투하고, 불면과 긴장의 흔적을 새긴다. 건물들은 의도적으로 회색과 차가운 청색 계열로 그렸으며, 그 속에서 산발적으로 켜진 노란 빛은 강제로 깨어있는 도시, 그리고 심리적 침투와 불안을 시각화한 장치다.
결국 리본은 다시 궁으로 돌아오고, 공주는 그것을 낚아챈다. 그 장면은 정보를 손에 쥔 권력의 형상, 혹은 누군가의 운명을 결정하는 행위로 읽힐 수 있다. 그 리본은 공주가 원하는 정보를 가지고 돌아왔을까, 아니면 그저 사람들을 밤새 괴롭힌게 전부일까. 그것은 다시 막이 오르면 알 수 있을 것이다.
